When is Edinburgh quiet? Never.
Heading into Fringe, Festival and Tattoo time - the streets (or certainly those in the centre) will be rammed with people.
Along with all of the opportunities that brings for street photography.

Protest
Princes Street, Edinburgh, taken on the pavement opposite the Balmoral Hotel (5 star luxury hotel).
There are times wandering around the city that I do wonder what year it feels like - or even what century it is - given the levels of poverty and deprivation that mingle so easily with the crowds of tourists and shoppers - to the extent here that the body in the sleeping bag is either walked around or sometimes just stepped over.

A Modern City
Meet Elaine, who reads the Tarot cards and palms on the Royal Mile in Edinburgh.
One of the appealing elements of street photography is the new people it introduces you to - and I have had some great conversations with the street performers on the Royal Mile.
How they manage to engage day-by-day with the hoards of tourists gains my respect big time.
Many thanks to those who agreed to have their portraits taken.

Does street photography need to include people?
Does street photography have to always be about people? Or include people in the frame? I think not. Exploring Edinburgh there’s always the temptation to focus on the landscapes and the ‘famous’ buildings around you, but equally there are those quirky objects that you encounter.

I spent a Saturday afternoon at Modern 2 exploring the Resistance exhibit. Well presented and lots to think about. It shows how photography - and the photography of protest - keeps memory alive. Much here that’s happened in my lifetime and that has just passed me by.
Camera
The best camera is the one that you have with you……
Whilst "the best camera is the one you have with you", I have experimented with different equipment from film, to DSLR and smartphone on the streets.
As a preference I now tend to use either a Ricoh GR iii or Fujifilm XT-5.

There’s a Scotrail train every 30 minutes from the village into the centre of Edinburgh.

I aim to travel into the city at least once a week to explore the streets.
Whilst the population of the city doubles during festival time in August, for most of the year the streets are busy and its a great location for photography.
